Bittersweet
This week was definitely bittersweet for me as it was my last week in my kindergarten classroom. I feel so blessed with the time I was able to experience in this classroom and all I was able to learn while there. In the beginning it was definitely a little overwhelming, however after a couple weeks I became much more comfortable. This week I had the opportunity to have my own math group again which is always so fun for me. In my group we played UNO. It was so much fun to play with them and see their curiosity sprout when deciding which card will match with the one on the pile. Something I found kind of neat is how much their confidence grew throughout the game. In the beginning of the game many of the students asked me questions about which card would work, but by the end of the game they hardly asked any questions and were doing it mostly on their own. This week I also was able to do something I do not get to do very often and that is be there for art time. During art time they actually have another teacher come in to do an art project with them. This week they made a turkey in spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday coming up. I really enjoyed helping with this process. On my last day the class gave me a homemade book filled with drawings made by each of the students. It was very humbling and made me remember how special this career choice really is.
What types of classroom management are incorporated to make the classroom run smoothly?
The main type of classroom management that I have seen in my practicum classroom is behavior modification. One example I see of this is with punch cards. Each student in the classroom has a punch card and when they get the whole card filled up, they are able to get a prize. Mrs. D often gives punches to students that are following directions or exceed what others are doing in the classroom. Another one is the purple slips. These are little slips of paper that Mrs. D gives to students that are going above others. When students get one, they are able to take it down to the office and put it in a box. Each month a name is drawn from the box to get a special prize of some sort. It is also a way to motivate others to be better in the classroom. She will often give them out when many other students are acting out. This usually makes the rest of the students want to work harder in the classroom and it creates sort of a domino effect for all the students.
Technology in Mathematics
Technology has grown so much since I was in school. I would have never thought technology could be used so much during math time, but it is a major part of their everyday math lessons. During whole group math time Mrs. D uses the smart board most of the time. She usually starts the lesson by showing a video that goes over the lesson and how to do it. Next the students and Mrs. D do some problems together. The students follow along with Mrs. D and what she does on the board. Then she will call students up to the board to use the smart board and complete some problems. The smart board is a great way to engage the students more in the lesson.
I would just like to say that this was a great experience for me and I learned so much from Mrs. D and her students. I am so thankful that their are opportunities in the classroom like this for me.
