Halloween- Kindergarten Style

This week was full of spooky Halloween festivities. Tuesday was of course Halloween Day, so the students showed up dressed in their awesome costumes. I was only there for the morning activities however, I am sure there was more celebrations in the afternoon. The students started the morning off by parading through the hallways and around the outside of the building. Parents of the students stood in these areas to take pictures of their students. After this, the students went back to their classroom where they got to have a fun juice and donut treat and then create a craft. Some students' parents stayed for this celebration and got to work on the art project of creating a skeleton hand with their children. I thought this was really neat for the teacher to involve the parents within the classroom. You could tell the parents really respected Mrs. D and thought she was a good fit for their children by the way they interacted with one another. This is the kind of relationship I hope to have with my students' parents in my own classroom. Throughout the week, the students learned about spiders including reading "The Itsy Bitsy Spider." On Friday, Mrs. D created a fun snack for the students. She made ramen noodles, and told the students it was "spider soup." The students thought this was quite hilarious and I thought this was such a fun and unique way to end the spider unit.

How does the teacher motivate unmotivated learners?

Mrs. D has on table of students in particular that she often has to get on to because they are talking too much and such. I would say one student in particular in this group is the most unmotivated to learn, so often ends up distracting the rest of the students at the table. Mrs. D often solves this problem by moving this particular student away from the table to work at the main big table closer to her. This seems to work for the other students because they are no longer distracted, but the other student who I will call "T," is upset at this point because he has to sit alone and does not at all seem motivated to work. I am not sure what could be done to help this student. One day I sat with this student while at the big table and helped him with his assignment by asking him questions about what he should do next and me talking him through the process seemed to help him a lot. However, I realize that Mrs. D does not have time to sit with him through every class period, so I am wondering if he needs a para to work with him and keep him motivated and on task.

Metaphysics (chapter 9)

This term really stuck out to me because this is a lot of the reason why I wanted to become a kindergarten teacher. I love the way little minds work and how innocent they are. Although it can be very difficult to explain the world and how it works to young minds, it is so amazing to me how open minded they are, and as teachers we get to fill their minds with knowledge to help them understand the world. Something I would like to do as a kindergarten teacher is to start each day by asking my students a question about the world and how it works and the people in the world and such things and discuss with them the answers of the question and really try to help them think deeper about the world. My supervising teacher does a similar activity where she gives them a would you rather do this or this or eat this or this scenario. She gives them a minute or so to think about it, and then goes around to each student and asks for their answers. The students really seem to enjoy this activity and it is a great start to the morning to get their brains working and ready for the learning day ahead of them.
